In Louisiana, this tradition evolved into the centerpiece of Mardi Gras festivities—a colorful, ring-shaped pastry covered in purple, green, and gold sugar, representing justice, faith, and power. Inside each cake is a small hidden baby, and whoever finds it is said to have good fortune (and the responsibility of bringing the next King Cake!).
